I used to think “I’m not artistic” was a permanent personality trait until my friend Nora handed me a cheap canvas, a $12 acrylic paint set, and told me to just cover the whole thing in one color and see what happened. That’s it. No pressure to make it look like anything. Three hours later…
Here’s the thing nobody tells you before you get chickens: the outside of the coop is what gets photographed, but the inside is what determines whether you actually enjoy keeping chickens or dread every single cleaning day. I learned this the hard way helping my friend Casey set up her first coop, where we spent…
I bought my first Trofast frame mostly out of desperation — my kid’s room had turned into a toy minefield and I needed something cheap, fast, and sturdy enough to survive daily abuse. What I didn’t expect was how many completely different rooms in my house it would eventually end up solving, once I stopped…
I spent my first two years at my current job with exactly one dying succulent and a sticky note calendar in my cubicle, and I genuinely didn’t realize how much that nothing-space was affecting my mood until I finally redid it over a single weekend with stuff from one Target run. It sounds small. It…
I painted my bedroom “greige” four different times before I admitted the problem wasn’t the paint, it was that I kept picking colors because they were safe, not because I actually liked them. The room I have now — a deep, slightly dusty blue-green — gets compliments almost every single time someone sees it, and…
My closet used to be a single rod and a floor pile, and I genuinely could not find a specific black sweater for three weeks because it was wedged between a winter coat and a bag of clothes I meant to donate. The day I finally redid it properly, I found four things I’d forgotten…
I own three Kallax units at this point, which is either a sign that it’s genuinely the most versatile piece of furniture IKEA makes, or a sign that I have a problem. Probably both. What got me hooked wasn’t the shelf itself — it’s the plainest possible cube storage you can buy — it’s how…
I almost painted my bedroom a trendy sage green two years ago before a friend talked me into navy instead, and I’m genuinely grateful she did. Sage has already started to feel a little dated in a lot of the rooms I see now. My navy bedroom still looks exactly as good as the day…
I bought my first IVAR shelf unit because it was the cheapest option in the store, not because I had a vision. It sat in my studio apartment unfinished — raw pine, no stain, no backing — for about four months before I actually did anything with it. Once I did, it became the thing…
My first pallet project was a coffee table I was so proud of that I posted it before I’d actually sat anything heavier than a magazine on it. Two weeks later a mug of coffee went through a gap I hadn’t sanded properly, and I learned the hard way that pallet furniture looks deceptively easy…
